Effects of a nutrient enriched water on water intake and indices of hydration in healthy domestic cats fed a dry kibble diet (Zanghi et al., 2018)

  • In the study, cats that were offered nutrient-enriched water had a 60% higher mean weekly liquid consumption and increased urinary output that improved measures of hydration (30% lower urine osmolality and 33% decreased urine specific gravity), compared to cats offered only tap water.
  • Cats in need of greater water intake, perhaps due to age or health conditions, may benefit from drinking a highly palatable, nutrient-enriched water.

Evaluation of the effects of a nutrient-enriched water supplement in healthy domestic cats in Europe (Colliard et al., 2019)

  • Compared to cats offered only tap water, cats that consumed nutrient-enriched water significantly increased their total daily water intake (up to 28%) and urine dilution that was reflected in a 12.5% decreased osmolality and a lower specific gravity.

Nutrient-enriched water supplements nutritionally support hydration in the domestic cat (Wils-Plotz et al., 2019) ACVIM Forum Research Abstract Program

  • This study evaluated 2 types of nutrient-enriched water that varied only in the gum content. Results demonstrated that both types of nutrient-enriched water, increased the total daily liquid intake and significantly improved urine measures of hydration in healthy cats based on greater daily urine output and dilution.

Hydration measures in cats during brief anesthesia: intravenous fluids versus pre-procedure water supplement ingestion (Zanghi et al., 2019) ACVIM Forum Research Abstract Program

  • This study demonstrated that cats ingesting a nutrient-enriched water supplement 2-3 hrs prior to anaesthesia will begin the procedure better hydrated as determined by a significant increase of 0.9% total body water (TBW) prior to intervention.
  • In addition, cats that ingested the supplement appear to be equally hydrated compared to cats administered intra-venous fluids (IV) or better hydrated than cats with no IV fluids, following completion of a brief anaesthetic procedure.

  • Increasing the volumes of nutrient-enriched water with and without poultry flavouring led to increased free liquid consumption and was associated with greater urine output and dilution as measured by urine specific gravity.
